Congratulations Joshua Andree

Packing Room Prize

Despard Gallery would like to congratulate Joshua Andree, who has been awarded the packing room prize for this years Hadley Art Prize. The Hadley’s Art Prize Hobart is one of the richest landscape art prizes in Australia, with an acquisitive prize of $100,000. The annual prize is awarded to a contemporary artist for the best portrayal of the Australian landscape. The winner will be announced at the opening of the exhibition finalists’ works at the galleries at Hadley’s Orient Hotel, Hobart, on Friday 21 July. Exhibition runs from Saturday 22 July – Sunday 20 August 2022.

His entry titled Once Still Water (Requiem For A Lake) has been specially framed using reused King Billy Pine staves. Andree writes about the work “The King Billy Pine pipe staves that contain this painting one held the cold still waters of Lake Margaret, along with its ancient stories. The Tree remains a pre-colonial relic of a different history and a depth  of time one cannot understand.  It is a remnant, a sliver of history, yet alludes to possible futures through its act of remembrance.”

Joshua Andree is also exhibiting a new body of work at the Moonah Arts Centre (MAC). This special off-site exhibition features three new major paintings by Andree, alongside a suite of small studies, all capturing his unique interpretation of the ambience of Tasmanian environment and its oceanic surrounds. Exhibition continues through to 5 August 2023.
